FOSTER CITY, CA � July 17, 2000 � PE Biosystems Group (NYSE: PEB),
a PE Corporation business, announced today it will now conduct business
under the name Applied Biosystems Group. The company will seek formal
stockholder approval of this name change at its annual meeting in
October.
"The Applied Biosystems name is well known in the life science marketplace,"
said Michael W. Hunkapiller, Ph.D., president of Applied Biosystems and
senior vice president of PE Corporation. "Using this name will consolidate
our name recognition as a provider of key technologies for new discoveries,
pharmaceuticals and applied markets."
To accommodate the new group name, the current Applied Biosystems division
will now operate under the name Molecular Biology.
Founded in 1981, Applied Biosystems, Inc. was acquired by The Perkin-Elmer
Corporation in 1993. In 1998 The Perkin-Elmer Corporation created the
PE Biosystems Division consisting of Applied Biosystems, PerSeptive Biosystems,
PE Informatics, and Tropix. In 1999 The Perkin-Elmer Corporation changed
its name to PE Corporation in connection with the recapitalization of
the company and the sale of its analytical instruments business. The PE
Biosystems Division then became the PE Biosystems Group.

(NYSE: PEB), now conducting business under the Applied Biosystems name,
with sales of $1.2 billion during fiscal 1999, develops and markets instrument-based
systems, reagents, software and contract services to the life science
