Sequencher™ Software Now Available for ABI PRISM® BioLIMS® Genetic Information Management System

Gene Codes premier DNA analysis software will provide BioLIMS-equipped sequencing laboratories with vital, centralized data management capabilities.

FOSTER CITY, CA, September 12, 2000 -- Applied Biosystems (NYSE: PEB), a PE Corporation business, announced today that Gene Codes Corporation is releasing a special version of its Sequencher DNA analysis software designed specifically for the ABI PRISM BioLIMS Genetic Information Management System. Sequencher software is widely used in genetic research for fragment assembly, contig editing, vector and transposon screening, open reading frame (ORF) analysis, protein translations, restriction mapping, and heterozygote identification.

The BioLIMS system, manufactured by Applied Biosystems, manages all sequence, assembly, and fragment data generated by the company's ABI PRISM® family of DNA sequencers and genetic analyzers. BioLIMS software customers are usually large sequencing laboratories that generate massive amounts of data and require the storage capacity that a database affords.

"Our customers requested a version of the Sequencher program that could be used with BioLIMS software, and we are extremely pleased that it is now available," said Robert Jones, vice president and general manager for Informatics at Applied Biosystems. "Laboratories equipped with BioLIMS software will now have the centralized data management capacity that Sequencher software's Oracle® database provides, along with the software's superior DNA analysis capability."

"By combining the strengths of two superior products and the customer-support capabilities of two market-leading companies, we are providing genetics labs with a much more powerful way to store and manage data," said Howard Cash, president of Gene Codes. "We take pride in adapting our product to meet new technological demands, so when customers requested a BioLIMS-compatible version of our Sequencher software, we looked forward to the challenge. This joint project will facilitate human disease research, which makes us all winners."

The ABI PRISM BioLIMS Genetic Information Management System enables laboratories to create a highly flexible bioinformatics infrastructure. The software collects, stores, and manages DNA sequence and fragment data, eliminates scattered and redundant files, automates data analysis, manages data across multiple projects, and allows data sharing among collaborators.

The new Sequencher software for the BioLIMS system will be made available on a site-license basis by Gene Codes Corporation. The PC version is currently shipping, with the Macintosh version to follow shortly. Gene Codes Corporation, which is the only third-party company to be a certified provider of sequencing analysis software for direct interaction with the BioLIMS system, will sell and support the new product. Both companies are dedicated to working closely with customers to provide an integrated solution for the data management and analysis needs of sequencing laboratories worldwide.
